University of Maryland Help Center -

 SERVICES

The Help Center is a peer counseling and crisis intervention hotline. Our counselors are rigorously trained in interpersonal communication and crisis intervention to handle a wide variety of calls. Some of the issues we have dealt with include:

  • Relationship issues
  • Roommate issues
  • Pregnancy options
  • Sexuality
  • Feelings of Isolation
  • The passing of close family or friends
  • Rape
  • Suicide

What Is Help Center's Confidentiality Policy?

You do not have to provide names or any other identifying information to talk to us. All calls we receive in Help Center are 100% confidential. Calls are completely anonymous, and there is absolutely no record keeping within Help Center. We are here to provide you with an anonymous listening ear. No concern is either too big or small. Our intent is to LISTEN and provide feedback. We are ready to speak with you.

What Kind of Resources Does Help Center Offer?

The Help Center has a long list of resources available. We are ready to inform you about community resources (Planned Parenthood, AA, AL-ANON) and campus information (Counseling Center, Student Groups, Academic Advising). This information is also available in the Resources Section.

Does Help Center Offer Walk-in Services?

Yes, in addition to our hotline, we also offer walk in services. Walk ins are treated just like calls, except they provide you with a chance to sit down and talk face to face with one of our highly trained counselors. It is also possible to bring a friend to a walk-in. Just like the calls we receive, walk ins are 100% confidential.

When Is Walk-in Counseling Available?

Walk-in counseling is not always available. The walk-in hours depend on the availability of counselors, so we may not be open at all times. It is best to call ahead; we also indicate on our front door if we are available for walk-ins.
